Our eyes
do not perceive light the way cameras do.
Compared to a camera, we are much more sensitive to changes in dark tones than
we are to similar changes in bright tones. It enables our vision to operate
over a broader range. Gamma is what translates between our eye's light
sensitivity and that of the camera. Gamma setting is required to compensate for
properties of human vision with light and color

Gamma control makes the colors in a
photograph display accurately. Understanding how gamma
works can improve one's exposure technique, in addition to helping one make the
most of image editing. The gamma control can lighten the dark parts of a
picture without overexposing the lighter areas.
